François and Bernard Baschet, or the Baschet Brothers, are two instrument builders from France. Bernard (b. 1917) is an engineer and François (b. 1920) is a sculptor and together they have been collaborating on instrument inventions and sound sculptures since the early 1950s. This 10" record was a promotional disc released The Museum of Modern Art, NY in conjunction with an exhibition of the brothers' works. Four of the featured pieces were composed by Jacques Lasry and two by Daniel Ouzouzoff. The diagram and corresponding notes shown above are the instruments used on these recordings. My apologies for the occasional noise on this transfer. This was a thrift store find. I think it can still be enjoyed regardless. Download.

ReplyDeleteAt the age of 21 I was in Paris for a month and a half in late 1966 and happened upon their studio a couple blocks from where I was living. I heard music, went to the open door and was immediately invited in and offered a chair. It turned out they gave little, very informal concerts/gatherings on Saturday afternoons. It was not a large room and the instruments took up a great deal of the space. Both Baschet brothers were there as were Jacques and Yvonne Lasry, also playing. The "concert" included a mix of some classical pieces and some contemporary (and even improvised) pieces. Afterwards everyone got up and milled around the instruments, while they explained how they worked and we could try them out. I went again on another Saturday. It was all quite a magical experience.
